Energy is undoubtedly an important asset in today's world. When it comes to modernization, we have to look after each and every aspect that creates an effect to where we are leading to and what we are aiming for, to maintain a sustainable development. Saving power is one such concern which has risen to top of list in recent times
.


When talking about Computer and technology, power is a valuable asset. So saving energy is really very important. We have moved ahead many steps in this direction. Moving from CRT monitors to LCD and LED, we have not only reduced the size or implemented any new fashion, we have actually been able to save a whole lot of power, but still there is long road ahead. There are various companies which have forwarded a step towards this

Blackle is another initiative in saving energy. It is a part of green computing. Blackle claims to save energy by the dark background of its website.




Blackle is a website powered by Google Custom Search and created by Heap Media, which aims to save energy by displaying a black background and using grayish-white font color for search results.

The functionality of the site is simple. The Blackle site uses the Google search engine and works in much the same way; users enter text into the box provided, and the query is sent to the Google search engine.


History

The history of blackle runs its way from back January 2007, when Mark Ontkush, the owner of the ecoIron blog, suggested that a large amount of energy could be saved if Google switched their home page from white to black. The actual initial savings calculated were 750 Megawatt-hours a year which were first incorrectly estimated to be 3000 Megawatt-hours. Tony Heap, the owner of HeapMedia, started the Blackle site shortly after these events.


Energy Saving Principle

The principle is based on the the fact that different colors consume different amounts of energy on computer monitors. The concept behind Blackle is that computer monitors can be made to use less energy by displaying much darker colors. Black colour consume less energy as compared to white.
Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.


 The theory is websites with black background save energy. That claim is based on an assumption that "a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen."

  

“Even if the energy savings are small, they are representative of the need for each of us to start taking small steps to save energy,”  says Blackle’s Dr. Heap (who holds a doctorate in exercise physiology) 


 “My hope is that by setting Blackle as their home page people will be reminded of this need to save energy each time they go online.” Similar wording appears on Blackle’s “about” page
